What is the Internet?

The Internet has become such a vital part of the lives of almost everybody in the past 10 years. The internet allows for instant access to information about almost anything at any time.

Although the internet is not a physical thing, I think that it definitely is a place. Many millions, if not billions, of people use it as a place to interact with one another, consume media, purchase products, and even as an occupation. The internet can be thought of as its own world, with tons of individual communities of people doing different things that fit their interests. Due to this, as people interact with one another, new knowledge and information will naturally be shared and spread among a wide range of people. Because of this, the internet can be described as a sort of cultural melting pot where ideas can be dispersed to almost anybody at any time.

While the internet has been such a positive tool to humans, it does not come without any negative aspects. Drawing reference from “Is Google Making Us Stupid?”, it is without a doubt that the instant access to information has had a profound effect on our attention spans. It is stated in the article by multiple people that they have had a much harder time digesting long pieces of literature or other writing, which was very likely caused by the internet’s ability to provide instant access to shorter works that provide the same information.

The internet has had a net positive impact on us as humans, allowing us to do new things with it every single day and will keep evolving as such, but there are plenty of negative things that we do need to be concerned about as well.
